What is stem injection?

Stem injection is a process by which herbicide is injected directly into a plants hollow cane. This method is particularly effective with the invasive plant species of Japanese knotweed, Bohemian Knotweed. By injecting herbicide into the plants crown you increase the transfer of herbicide to the plant roots. Stem injection poses less of a threat to the surrounding vegetation. Japanese Knotweed

Knotweed is a bright green plant with a hollow stem similar to that of bamboo. There are three types of knotweed, only two pose a real threat. The three in most to least invasive are: Bohemian, Japanese, and Giant. Knotweed can grow upwards to 16 feet tall and spreads by means of its roots. Knotweed creates a monoculture as it will push out all other plant species, including trees, as no new species can seed under the fast growing light taking canopy of knotweed. Knotweed can be identified by its spade shaped leaves as well as by the off white flowers that will go to seed in from the Bohemian knotweed. Because the plant has few natural predators it has spread throughout North America and many rivers and ports are infected. To learn more about this invasive species click here.
